Adam McKinney dancing. Adam McKinney was 17 when he received a book featuring photos of Alvin Ailey dancers and he recalls being instantly enamored with them. Soto had a year career in ballet and McKinney is still dancing after 16 years. Each one bristled recently when a national news anchor blithely wondered at how long young Prince George of Cambridge would remain interested in dancing ballet.

Especially here in the U. I remember quite clearly classmates and even my own family members calling me a sissy for studying ballet back in the s and '70s. What terrified me was that they might discover I was gay when I wasn't even sure what to call my sexual orientation. I just wanted to dance. That's a puzzle to me because there is now so much more exposure to dance in the media: "Dancing with the Stars," "So You Think You Can Dance," "World of Dance," not to mention all the videos that suck you into the YouTube vortex.

Don't we see the fierce dedication, hard work and athleticism that goes into creating a male dancer? Is that really only a dream for women? Unfortunately, that much media exposure does not seem to enlighten those who disdain male dancers.

A lack of understanding about dance continues to drive the homophobic reactions of bullies and bigots. Maybe this is because arts education programs that formerly provided students with exposure to the performing arts have been slashed or decreased in some areas.

Little that doesn't represent machismo and monetization is considered valid. Data compiled by Doug Risner, a professor of dance at Wayne State University in Detroit, shows that only 32 percent of male dancers have fathers who support their desire to dance. Typically, American dads only want their sons to be athletic on the sports field. Adding music and ballet technique—or tap dancing, contemporary movement, ballroom or jazz steps—to physicality somehow makes that pursuit unforgivably girlish.

Much of this poisonous attitude springs from misogyny—currently permeating American politics and society—and the notion that the worst thing a man can do is to emulate what is perceived as exclusively female behavior. Additionally, a fear of anything different from the cultural norm adds a xenophobic taint to public opinion. It probably doesn't help that ballet vocabulary is French too froufrou or that it's considered a Russian art form too subversive—maybe even Communist!

The performing arts in the U. Still, I have hope that consciousness is changing. Millennials and Gen Z show far more tolerance towards flexible gender definitions. According to a study by The Intelligence Group, a consumer research institution, more than two-thirds of those interviewed between the ages of 14 to 34 say that gender doesn't determine behavior or life aspirations as it once did.

I am also heartened to see better boys' programs in ballet schools nationwide that allow for boys to train with other boys so they won't feel so isolated in their ambitions. These opportunities also give young men a chance to discuss bullying and teasing and to discover ways to defuse verbal and physical assaults.

Smothering creative impulses can kill the spirit. I was lucky to survive the abuse and ignorance that derailed other young men. I don't want to see that happen to anyone else. East Before South is the tale of a very long trip that began, innocently enough, with a fabulous party in Rio de Janeiro. The journey will take you on a ride in rattletrap buses, dugout canoes, camel trucks, army convoys, sea ferries, and clapped-out trains. It will take you through places not on any map. It will show you the world the way it really is. From Rio, the road took me across the heartland of Brazil to Belem at the mouth of the mighty Amazon and upriver into the heart of the jungle. Then down the coast for the Carnaval and further down still, hugging the beaches, toward Argentina and Buenos Aires. Two days later, back again, toward Moscow again, and farther east still, always east, on the Tran Siberian Express bound for Ulan Bator. Two Koreans are worth one Japanese.

The image of surfing is everywhere in American popular culture — films, novels, television shows, magazines, newspaper articles, music, and especially advertisements. In this book, Kristin Lawler examines the surfer, one of the most significant and enduring archetypes in American popular culture, from its roots in ancient Hawaii, to Waikiki beach at the dawn of the twentieth century, continuing through Depression-era California, cresting during the early sixties, persistently present over the next three decades, and now, more globally popular than ever. Throughout, Lawler sets the image of the surfer against the backdrop of the negative reactions to it by those groups responsible for enforcing the Puritan discipline — pro-work, anti-spontaneity — on which capital depends and thereby offers a fresh take on contemporary discussions of the relationship between commercial culture and counterculture, and between counterculture and capitalism. Why Is There Still a Stigma Surrounding Boys Who Dance?

By Flora Drury For Mailonline. Afghanistan has long been considered one of the most religious countries in the world: a place where men and women follow Islamic doctrine carefully. But behind the devout exterior, the country is hiding a dark secret - one which the government has tried to sweep under the rug. Bacha bazi, which translate as 'boy play', is on the surface a harmless form of entertainment - young boys dancing for the entertainment of their elders. In reality, it is often little more than sex slavery, where boys as young as 10 are passed around a group of middle aged men for their own sexual gratification. Boys like Shukur, who was just 12 when he was stolen away from his family and made to be a 'bacha bereesh'. It took him five years to escape, and he now uses the dances he learned to make a living. Tradition: Shaharyar became a dancer when he was 17, after his father died and he needed to make money.
